Junee has a long and interesting history. It developed rapidly when the main railway line arrived in 1881, being halfway between Melbourne and Sydney. The wealth of the Junee is reflected in the many grand buildings still standing today. Monte Cristo Homestead is a historic two story house in Junee built in 1884. It has been explored by many ghost hunters and is dubbed Australia's most haunted house. The Roundhouse Railway Museum is associated with the largest working railway roundhouse maintenance facility in the Southern Hemisphere, built in 1947.
