Things to see and do in Maldon:
Go back in time in historic Maldon, ride on the Steam Train, visit Carmans Tunnel Goldmine and discover old goldmine ruins. The Maldon Historic Reserve was established to protect Maldon's relics from the gold mining era that gave birth to the township, containing large areas of regrowth box-ironbark forests and grassy woodland, which were extensively harvested for the gold mining and farming industries. The National Trust declared Maldon Australia's first Notable Town in 1966. Today Maldon is a marvellous holiday destination. Experience steam train travel through the goldfields, walk along a trail on the Mount Alexander Diggings and take in the excellent views from the fire tower on Mount Tarrengower. The Maldon Folk Festival has long been recognised as the best value family festival around with the benefit of 3 decades of quality entertainment at affordable prices. The festival features folk music ranging from traditional, bluegrass, Celtic to blues; as well as workshops, instrument making, poetry and story telling.
For a tasty treat be sure not to miss the organically grown cherries and apricots from the popular Maldon Cherry Farm nestled on the western slopes of Mount Tarrengower. The farm is in a beautiful garden setting with an orchard of 1200 abundant fruit trees.
Maldon is a short 15 minute drive from Castlemaine where visitors can be assured of a very warm welcome. Be sure to visit Buda Historic Homestead where its important and large 19th century suburban gardens have survived for a period of 118 years from 1863.
