Things to see and do in Gilgandra:
The district of Gilgandra is situated 476 miles north west of Sydney on the junction of the Newell, Oxley and Castlereagh highways, with scenic drives to Warrumbungle National Park, Siding Springs and Western Plains Zoo on the outskits of Dubbo, a 45 minute drive away. The Cooee Motel is at the southern gateway to the majestic Warrumbungles, an area of forested ridges, barren spires and deep gorges, located 50 mins drive north of Gilgandra.
Closer to home is the Gilgandra Flora Reserve, 8.5 hectares of natural bushland, 6kms off the Newell, 8kms north of Gilgandra, making it an ideal picnic location. Other places of interest include local museums full of artifacts and memorabilia and the Gilgandra Observatory, located in the centre of Gilgandra and built by retired farmer, Jack Estens. This small observatory is a fine compliment to the professional observatory in Siding Springs which is Australia's premier facility for optical and infra-red astronomy.
On the Long Week-end in October of each year, the Gilgandra Community hosts the Coo-ee Festival. The festival incorporates many activities including a Mini Rodeo, Talent Quest, Street Parades and the NSW Coo-ee Calling Championships.
