Things to Do in Gunnedah NSW
Gunnedah is a small town situated on a ridge above the Namoi and Mooki Rivers in the wheat belt of northern NSW, 434 km north-west of Sydney. The area supports a number of primary industries including beef cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, lucerne, barley, coal, cotton, wool, oilseeds and sorghum. The Gunnedah area is also home to the largest koala colony to be found in NSW, west of the Great Dividing Range.Gunnedah is also known as 'The Town of My Country', a reference to the famous Australian poet Dorothea MacKellar (1885-1968) who spent a great deal of time on a local property between 1905 and the late 1930s where she drew inspiration from the local terrain.
While in Gunnedah you can experience the uniqueness of the area by visiting any number of local attractions. Check out the local museums and the Dorothea Mackellar Memorial. Be sure to visit the Lake Keepit Recreation Area which offers a variety of activities including fishing, swimming, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing and power boating. For the kids there is a children's pool, a BMX track, a skateboarding area and roller-skating rink. Other facilities include barbecues, a kiosk, toilets, half-court tennis and a five-hole golf course.
Seven kms west of Gunnedah on the Oxley Highway you will find the Waterways Wildlife Park with its many birds, emus, kangaroos, koalas lizards, possums and wombats. Or explore some of the lookouts and walking tracks for fine views of the town and surrounds.
