Things to Do in Tumut:

Tumut is ideally located midway between Australia's major capitals. The beautiful Tumut Valley is inland from Canberra, only 260m above sea level and has a mild climate. The area is bordered by State Forests and is gateway to the Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park in NSW.

The Tumut region is spectacular in natural beauty and diversity. The region enjoys four distinct seasons, each with its own charm. Autumn brings colour to the park lands, the Snowy Mountains are spectacular during winter, the blossoms announce spring, and in summer the lakes, rivers and streams provide serenity and coolness.

The area is also famous for the legacy of the mountain cattlemen and the 19th century goldrush. You can explore pioneer huts in the high country, and remnants of the gold era at Kiandra and Adelong. The Reefer Battery at Adelong Falls are among the best preserved former gold workings in Australia and the heritage listed buildings along Adelong's main street should not be missed.

The Yarrangobilly Caves, a string of caves in a limestone belt, are a long standing local attraction. The caves are 4.7 kilometres off the Snowy Mountains Highway, and 77 kilometres from Tumut. During winter the warm thermal pools are perfect for swimming. Enjoy the scenic drive through lush dairy pastures and over the beautiful Tumut River to the Violet Farm and Garden Cafe. The Tumut River, Blowering Dam, Jounama Pondage and Talbingo Reservoir provide anglers every opportunity to land a trout or golden perch. Tee off at one of the area's five lakeside or mountain golf courses, where kangaroos share the greens.

Tumut provides an ideal touring base for exploring the mountains and valleys of the Snowy, and places such as Tumbarumba, Corryong, Khancoban, Adaminaby, Jindabyne, and Thredbo. Prominent events in the area include:- Festival of the Falling Leaf - April in Tumut, Apple Blossom Festival - October in Batlow and the Tumut Boxing Day Race - December in Tumut.
