Shepparton is major regional centre in the heart of northern Victoria's Murray Goulburn region. The area is renowned for its huge agricultural production, particularly of fruits, vegetables, dairy and cereals. Visitors can go to the Ardmona and SPC fruit canneries factory sales outlets and Belstack Strawberry Farm. The Murray waterways offering a variety of activities including fishing, nature walks and water sports. The town also boasts a large regional Art Gallery, Kidstown, golf, pokies, Ten Pin Bowling and a skate park.
The network of forests, parks and reserves which follow the paths of the Goulburn and Broken Rivers through Shepparton, offer good bushwalking tracks such as Reedy Swamp Walk and picnic spots. Victoria Park Lake is the centre of recreation in Shepparton, fronting the main highway and featuring boating facilities, bike paths and walking tracks. Adjacent to the lake is the award winning Aquamoves health and fitness centre which offers both indoor and outdoor pools.
The Furphy Foundry is located in Shepparton. John Furphy, the famous blacksmith and wheelwright, came to Shepparton in 1873 and by 1880 he was manufacturing water carts that became hugely popular around the country. Many were purchased by the Australian Army and were widely used in camps during WWI where the the term 'furphy', meaning a rumour or tall tale, came to be used because soldiers gathered around the water supply where rumours were shared and spread. John's brother Joseph wrote the great Australian novel, Such is Life. Today the Furphy family still own the foundry and museum on Drummond Road.
The town's festivals revolve largely around food and include International Dairy Week in January, Mooroopna Fruit Salad Day in February, the Arts Festival in March, the Goulburn Valley Vintage Festival on the third Sunday in March, and the Agricultural Show in October.
