Cape Schanck Light Station - Mornington Peninsula
Accommodation in Cape Schanck Lighthouse at Mornington Peninsula - a rare opportunity to enjoy self-contained accommodation at a working Lighthouse. This heritage listed Light Station was built completed in 1859 and sits in a national park on the cliffs over looking the Bass Strait.
Accommodation at Cape Schanck Lightstation is in the buildings that were once used by the Lighthouse Keepers and visiting officials. There are 3 cottages with kitchens, verandahs and living areas with separate bedrooms - perfect for family holidays or groups. Plus, there is one suite more like a motel style accommodation with an ensuite bathroom which is perfect for couples.
Cape Schanck Lighthouse offers guests a unique glimpse of the past while this beacon actively protects the shipping lanes of the Bass Strait. The historic light is one of the few still operating as it did during the early 1800's.The experience happens in a heritage listed active Lighthouse located at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula - about 90 minutes from Melbourne.
Cape Schanck Lightstation is open every day for tours up the lighthouse or in the museum. Guided bush walks are available upon request.

Cape Schanck Accommodation Options:
- Head Lightkeeper's Cottage - this originally housed the light keeper and family. The building was completed in the 1850's and is made of the same stone as the Lighthouse. 3 bedrooms; one with a Queen Bed and one Single bed. One with a double bed and the last has 3 single beds. Self contained cottage with all linen provided. (max occupancy is 8)
- Red Cottage - Built in the 1930's, this red brick building was added to house additional workers. The Red Cottage 3 bedrooms one with a queen bed and two single beds. One with a queen bed and the last has 2 single beds. Self contained cottage with all linen provided. (max occupancy is 8)
- Museum Cottage - Often the choice of couples seeking a little more space, this one bedroom cottage has a queen bed and 2 single beds. Self contained cottage and all linen provided. Children are welcome but no porta-cots available. (max occupancy is 4)
- Inspector's Room - Unlike the other cottages, the Inspector's Room is a motel-style room off veranda of head light keeper's cottage. Ensuite bathroom, queen size bed. BBQ facilities available. There are only simple cooking options for tea and coffee facilities with microwave oven and fridge. (max occupancy is 2)

All the cottages have kitchens. Breakfast fixings are supplied as the property is in a national park and it takes about 20 minutes to drive to the closest town.
Conferences and Groups
Accommodation at Cape Schanck Lightstation is very popular for groups holidays, but you'll need to book in advance because this accommodation is in high demand. Maximum accommodation if you book all the accommodation as a group is 22 people.
All cottages have been residences of past Lighthouse Keepers. Breakfast is supplied if required. The old stables can be used for group meals and communal activities.
Things to do in Cape Schanck and Mornington Peninsula:
Cape Schanck is part of Parks Victoria and Mornington Peninsula National Park. The lighthouse is in the Cape Schanck Coastal Park which includes the lighthouse grounds as well as coastal walk ways.
After you have arrived and settled into your room, you might explore the Lighthouse grounds and the Boardwalk for breathtaking vistas. There are numerous walks from the grounds or you may simply choose unwind with a glass of wine as you watch the sun disappear beyond the hills.
Lighthouse grounds closed to visitors in the evenings leaving you in a private paradise. You'll be provided with keys to enter and exit the grounds whenever you like. The local villages of Sorrento or Portsea are the closest places for shops and restaurants as the Cape Schanck National Park.
Day Walks from Cape Schanck are fantastic. We recommend starting early with a picnic lunch and walking to Bushrangers Bay. While you are enjoying the tranquility of this special place you may see kangaroos in the hills behind you, or whales might breach at sea. Seals and dolphins are also regularly sighted on the coastal walk.
In your final day at Cape Schanck Lighthouse, you might like to walk to Fingal Beach - again taking in some magical views. If you have enough energy left, you can also walk the cliff tops to Gunamatta Surf Beach.
For those who want more than walks through spectacular uncrowded scenery - you can always go rock climbing or try surf fishing, or even go diving and snorkeling where you just might discover the sunken submarine that sank near Cape Schank. This section of Mornington Peninsula is also renown for great surfing beaches.
Wine Tasting is a popular past time with Mornington Peninsula hosting some of Australia's premium wine growers. Golf on the Peninsula is always a pleasure with many golf courses of national ranking and the Cape Schanck Resort just down the road.
Finding Our Cape Schanck Accommodation
The grounds at Cape Schanck Lightstation close to the public around 4pm. Guests will need to arrive before 4, or make arrangements to use the coded key box to gain entry to the grounds. Once inside the lighthouse grounds, you'll have to place to yourself to enjoy spectacular sunsets.
Take the Mornington Peninsula Frankston freeway in south east Melbourne (off Springvale road), at the end of the freeway the road continues through Frankston and changes to the Moorooduc Highway continuing to a T intersection with Boneo road. Turn left, travel up the Hill to the Pine trees turning right at Cape Schanck Road. Follow Cape Schanck road to the end, turn left onto the gravel road through the boom gates and drive around to the kiosk.
