Cowra
Cowra is the commercial centre of a strong agricultural area that covers horticulture, aquaculture and viticulture. The town offers genuine country hospitality, delicious food and wine, great natural attractions and a fascinating history. In 1944 more than 1,000 Japanese prisoners of war attempted to escape from a local internment camp. Cowra has since forged a remarkable friendship with Japan, and there are many tributes to this relationship around the town.
Sakura Matsuri, the Japanese cherry blossom festival, celebrates the start of Spring and is held annually at the Cowra Japanese Gardens. The event attracts thousands of locals and international visitors who have the opportunity to experience traditional elements of the Japanese culture.
It features sumo wrestling tournaments, karate and sword demonstrations, tea ceremonies, sake tasting and Gaguku (Japanese music) performances. Demonstrations of traditional Japanese crafts such as Origami, Calligraphy, Ikebana and Bonsai are also held throughout the festival. A selection of Japanese food is also generally available.
