Mount Isa is the most important industrial, commercial and administrative centres in inland Queensland. Mt Isa is located 977 kilometres west of Townsville on the Barkly Highway. Mount Isa is an important rail head; a key point in an extensive highway system Brisbane (1829km`s south), Townsville, Alice Springs and Darwin.

Mount Isa is one of the biggest cities in the world with an area of 41,000 square kilometres... believe it or not equal to the size of Switzerland. It has a population of 22,000 and is described as the `Oasis in the Outback`, a shimmering mirage on Queensland`s horizon for travellers from all corners of Australia.

Mount Isa was once a raw frontier town built around the vast mineral resources. This unique and progressive city sits on top of one of the world's richest copper, silver, lead and zinc ore bodies. The Mount Isa Mine, now owned by Xstrata, is still one of Australia's largest producers of copper ore.
